Craniosacral Therapy – A Gentle Hands-On Treatment
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a manual therapy technique consisting of light touch, listening, and good intention to engage the tissues, evaluate, and encourage the body to change and heal itself.
The Craniosacral System includes:
- cranial bones and sacrum (thus the name craniosacral);
- the ventricles – structures that produce, reabsorb and circulate cerebrospinal fluid (CSF);
- fascial membranes (meninges) that contain the entire central nervous system;
- and CSF itself.
What is Cerebrospinal Fluid?
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) is a clear fluid filtered from the blood that provides an ocean like environment for nutrition, cleansing, and protection for the brain and the nerve tissue of the spine.
A treatment session is usually about 45 to 60 minutes.
The patient remains fully clothed and simply lies in a comfortable position on a padded treatment table. The amount of manual touch of the therapist is very light, often as light as the weight of a coin. Patients are usually able to tell immediately, or within a few sessions, if this is a treatment that will help them.
Craniosacral Therapy is effective for adults and children.
This therapy is used with headaches and chronic pain patients of all types and ages. It is also used with babies and children with sleep issues or developmental delay, as well as for trauma victims from accidents and sports. Often times, the therapist will use CST in combination with other therapies, like massage, exercise, or before and after surgery or other medical procedures.
